桐
KIRI
These paulownia products are made by skilled craftsmen and are completed in a studio in Aizu which specialises in finalising paulownia goods. This final process applies the same time-consuming method as the one used for traditional paulownia cabinets: first they burn the surface by a gas burner, then they take off the soot by a buff, and finally they dab polishing powder on it and polish it with wax. This procedure contributes to keeping the inside of the boxes (and other similar goods) in good condition and, at the same time, to preventing the outside from getting stained by use. Furthermore, it leads to retaining the beauty of the wood grain and texture. As is known widely, the wood keeps breathing delicately even after being processed, absorbing and discharging moisture. The aforementioned carbonisation process is a unique method of wood surface treatment invented in Japan in order to maintain the breathing function and also to adapt to the Japanese changeable climate with distinct four seasons. It allows wooden boxes to adjust their humidity level both inside and outside and prevents the material from distortion.
